manually input run data
There have been times when I'm not able to run with my transmitter or iPod, but I'd still love to be able to count the run to my profile.
What about having a way to manually input your run distance/time?

I too am sick of this happening. I logged my farthest run yet about 10 days ago and usually run the nikeplus app along with runkeeper and it's been working flawless for the past month. But on my longest run, via runkeeper gps app, I ran 6.25 miles, the nikeplus app froze on 3.98 miles and said pace of 0'00" My sensor is not that old and it registered just fine, so I thought no biggie, I'll just calibrate it when I'm done to my runkeeper data. Well the max it would let me calibrate was to 6.04 and robbed me of the .21 miles which would've been my first 10K run.
Then tonight after running 4 miles, I went to hit end workout and it said 0 miles 0'00" as if I never hit play, yet it kept talking to me, 3 miles completed, 1 mile to go, 400 meters to go, blah blah blah, and then nothing. So it robbed me of 4 miles. I am getting really sick of this happening, it seems like just this year the app has turned super buggy and hasn't been working like it has.
I wish nike would get smart and let the app use the built in GPS on the iphone 3g and 3gs to make it easier for us iphone owners. It's way more accurate and would eliminate the need for these useless chips and be more environmentally friendly, but then that would cut into their profits so why would they.
If I didn't have a ton of friends training for a marathon with me that also use nike plus I would just abandon the whole program and use RunKeeper exclusively. I love how it runs off GPS and maps your runs so you see the route you ran, it's more accurate, it tracks pace, speed, elevation, etc. and if there is a problem, it's no problem because it allows me to enter my run manually :)
Please nike, get this fixed or at the VERY LEAST let us update runs manually, why is it so forbidden to allow manual input of runs?

Nike+ - a great motivator.
I think about why I've become somewhat of an evangelist regarding the Nike+ system. I accept it's flaws (like finishing my workout 12k's into a 20k run and being slightly inaccurate regarding distance) because for me, on the whole, the system has been incredibly motivating.
Why do I think the community is important?
Running is something I've always enjoyed but had never been able to commit to long term. In the past 6 months I've dropped 10 kilos and am running my first marathon in 8 weeks. I can chalk a lot of that up to Nike+. I think the true beauty of this system is that it lets you challenge yourself. Sure, you're part of a community but the reason that community is so solid is that every member of it is pushing themselves in the same way.
This isn't the Olympics.
I don't know why cheating is such a concern - do we really join group challenges to beat other people? Isn't the key reason for joining these challenges to push ourselves - to put ourselves in a situation that forces us to work harder than we have previously? Let's be honest guys, we're not training for Olympic Gold here. I ask you this: if someone cheats in a Nike+ challenge aren't they the one who ultimately loses? I don't mean that in a touchy-feely philosophical sense, I mean that they're ultimately not going to get the gains they're seeking through Nike+. If, on the other hand you've increased your mileage, speed etc by taking part in that challenge, then surely you've had a personal victory.
Nike+ lets me keep track - so don't let me miss a run.
In terms of the notion of inputting data itself, I come back to my original point. I chalk a lot of my continued motivation up to Nike+. Those graphs or the personal challenges I set myself become such a focus because I want to see, there on my laptop screen, the progress I'm making. Scribbling it down in some diary misses the point entirely - it doesn't get recognised in my total distance, it's a gap in my history. Early on, when I started using Nike+ I became so obsessed with it that, if I didn't have my iPod with me, I'd skip the workout - after all, what's the point if nobody knows I did it? I've now become a little more committed to running itself but I still feel ripped off if I have to run and it doesn't get recorded.
Bottom line (for me).
We've turned this into such a huge issue. Bottom line for me? The system works pretty well - let me input the odd data manually so my entire running history is there at my fingertips. Nike+ is a motivational tool - don't make it demotivating to run if I happen to leave my iPod at work.

I think it's a very good idea, especially since my Nike+ has constant issues with stopping itself in the middle, or even beginning of a run. I run the same distance 3 times a week, so I know what the data is supposed to be, but so far have no way to fix it. I just want to be able to track my running for my own personal use.
It's pretty sad that people are opposed to this because they fear "cheaters" in some pretend cyber-competition. Get lives losers.

I am on my second sensor and the nike+ still doesn't accurately record my mileage or pace. I have been to the apple store and to the website and they are no help. I currently have to multiply my nike reported mileage by 1.31 to get my accurate mileage. There should be a feature for you to manually input your mileage and to correct the downloaded mileage. We're all serious runners here; all these restrictions are an insult.

Folks, as the one who started all this I'd like to refocus the conversation. It feels like we're starting to talk in circles, since some of the newer comments express reservations that have already been addressed higher up in the thread.
So to recap:
"Let's manually input data!"
"No!"
"Yes!"
"Cheaters!"
"No, we want our miles logged, dammit! We sorta don't care about challenges!"
That's really all I've heard. Reread the thread for more detail, but it's easy for Nike to exclude manual data from challenges.
SO, the refined idea: Nike, please allow us to manually enter run data, but don't include those runs in challenges.
Comments?
I’m hopeful of consensus

There's nothing quite so frustrating as an iPod crash at 9.8k. It would be nice to at least salvage that lost run in some bare-bones way. It adds insult to injury to see my training progress permanently down by that 10k run. It ought to be possible to enter the basics--I ran 10k in 58 minutes, or whatever--in order to keep up personal distance and training stats.

I also like this idea... I had two of my runs that got lost when my ipod froze and I had to reboot and it was like I never ran those miles! I do hope Nike+ add this function in the future. I just run for personal reasons and set monthly goals and I was lucky that I still made my monthly goal despite having lost two runs, but I wish I got credit for those runs.

The point is not that the system is cheat proof; it isn't. The point is that the motivational level required to cheat the system is much higher than the reward.
With a non-monetary award like winning a challenge on an exercise site, very few, if any, people would necessarily go out of their way to cheat. With an easy, automatic way to enter times, there are no obstacles to bluffing and still a small personal sense of victory. Imagine having enough desire to purchase a Nike+ sensor for $30, learn enough to manipulate the code of your iPod entries, or tap the sensor repeatedly. Now try and imagine having enough desire to simply create an account and conflate the numbers (no proof of purchase necessary to create an account as of now).
I'd say you'll instantly find several hundred more "black" ranked runners, as well as a ridiculous, unbelievable community leaderboard.

This is fine, but the greatest part of Nike+ is it's a community with very few options but honesty. I like getting medals, trophies, and fighting in challenges knowing that I can't be cheated on.
There's an armband for no music for a reason. If you make this an option, please only count these towards personal goals and training regimens, not challenges or public profiles.

I think this is a great idea, except the non-Nike+ mileage should NOT count toward challenges.

Even if these runs were flagged somehow as non-nike, this would be a great idea.

Inappropriate?I've been running on a track, and I know exactly how far I've run, but the sportband is way off (e.g. 8km run registers as 3.7km, 3200m run registers as 2300m). I'm trying to calibrate this thing so that I can go for >8 miles on an unmarked trail & know how far I've gone. And I think it would be an excellent feature of the website if we could enter the known distance while leaving the run time the same. That way we could keep track of our actual progress as opposed to storing incorrect info. on the website. At this point, I'd rather go back to my stopwatch and Excel spreadsheets.
I’m frustrated that nikeplus won't let me be accurate
-
Inappropriate?I agree. I have just bought the NIKE+ and have had 3 runs all of which have failed to register properly. I have just clocked up six miles this morning and it only registered 0.1. I don't think I will be continuing to use this and will look for an alternative.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Sometimes I simply forget to charge my Ipod, and cannot use it for the run, and feel like I am wasting my time, cause I cant log the run. That's Crazy!!
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?lets face it - would u like some fat man sitting at the top of the leaderboard with 2,000,000 miles???? these might just be fun leaderboards but i dont want my hard work made a mockery of! manual insertion is a NO-NO. the problem is accuracy of the sensor. nike must improve it. that is the issue.

It's so mindnumbingly simple - show that the data was manually inputed with a little symbol or colour code or text or whatever! Looks a bit stupid having 2,000,000 miles of manually inputed data doesn't it! -
No one would. But, you get out of it what you put in. For me, the value is personal motivation. If someone wants to abuse it, that's to their detriment and, frankly, I am not going to let that bother me. What matters to me is setting goals, tracking progress, then pushing myself to new goals and getting proper credit for what I accomplish. I am a stickler for accuracy and it really bothers me that a multi-billion dollar company can't seem to find the energy to make sure their on-line product works well. Since it is not accurate and Nike does not seem interested in supporting its customer base, let me make sure what I put in is accurate and I get the credit for what I have accomplished. -
Inappropriate?I agree. I am just starting out and I was so proud of my 3.06 mile run and it didn't record the miles only the time, what's the deal with that? We need to manually input the data.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?I completely agree that we should be allowed to input data if our Nike+ crashed. This just happened to me now on a 5K. I plugged my ipod into my laptop, and it restarted, erased my 5k data. I am VERY angry about this. It throws off my weekly and monthly mileage. You would think Apple would fix this bug in the Nike+ program by now. Apparently it's been ongoing for a while...

Inappropriate?I completely agree. I just finished my first 10k and all my data deleted the minute I stopped running. It's totally frustrating. Seriously, who the heck would cheat on something like this? The actual Nike+ customers who will continue to use the product are the ones that want this function and won't use it to cheat.
Nike+ could always put a cap on how many times a month you're allowed to manually input data if they're really that worried about cheaters

Inappropriate?Absolutely! If I were to pick one thing to improve this is it!
-
Inappropriate?I agree. Also, sometimes my ipod malfunctions while running, and I end up with two or more separate recorded runs, and it only records the last one, which is not accurate.
-
Inappropriate?Started my run today and need to pause it at .4k when I restarted my run the sensor didn't pick up and so I did my whole run just for it to say that I only completed .4k in 40 min. UGH!!! I want to enter in my real run.

Inappropriate? It's SO obvious, let us manually input run data, which can then come up with a little star or asterisk or special colour code or whatever you like that signals the data has been manually inputed. Then competitions can block manuallly inputed runs if they're so nervous about cheats. PROBLEM SOLVED.
I also lost a big run tonight. Apparently there were no new runs to enter, despite my sensor working perfectly. My sensor was also logging miles instead of kilometres like I programmed it to but that's another issue entirely I suppose.
3140 people want to manually input run data - let us!!! As I said in a previous post, this site has crap functionality for an Nike/Apple collaboration - some of these great ideas from users are years old, why haven't they been implemented? Nothing has been, judging by the tabs at the left listing ideas under consideration (0), ideas completed (0) etc... it's like Nike+ is in still in Alpha mode, can we have the Beta version now?
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate? This was posted over a year ago. Over 3000 people likes it. And Nike do what? Nothing? Strange, why have this Feedback-function if you dont listen to whats wanted? But I hope that Im wrong and that Im the one that missed all the great things you done.

Inappropriate?Sadly, it is evident Nike is not concerned about providing a reliable service to its customer base. I will wager they don't even read the posts on this site. I have never seen a reply from Nike. The chip is expensive and for that reason alone I expect better, setting aside brand name recognition and company reputation. Perhaps it is time to find an alternative method to track run data and set personal goals and not waste any more money on chips when this one burns out. That's too bad because this is such a great idea and has huge potential -- if only....
I’m Frustrated and dissappointed

This isn't just a symptom of an incomplete product. It's a symptom of an incomplete company (Nike, that is). Nike is wonderful at coming up with new and great ideas, but never completes. This pod issue has been going on for a long time. They've never corrected it, and they've never responded to people despite these forums (which are probably for self-venting purposes only). Everything Nike touches is a catastrophe. Like the Nike Run on Randalls Island where the course had repeated sections that caused people to have to WALK at times during the 10k.
I use www.runningahead.com. It may not be fancy and as aestetically pleasing as Nike+, but it has all the tools that SERIOUS runners need. It's why Runner's World chose their log over that of Nike's any anyone else for that matter.
The best way for registrants to make Nike+ listen is by threatening to leave. -
Thanks! I'll check it out. -
Inappropriate?Yes, Let me manually input data! I want my miles logged. I DO NOT care about challenges!"
I’m annoyed that this cannot be done.
